Pittsburgh Fitness Expo returning to Monroeville

Tuesday, May 19, 2015, 9:00 p.m.

Established in 1999, the Pittsburgh Fitness Expo, featuring the Kumite Classic martial arts championship, is the region’s largest and most established fitness, health, wellness and multi-sport expo.

The annual event, now in its 16th year, again will take up residence this weekend — Friday and Saturday — at the Monroeville Convention Center.

The showcase of everything health and fitness features athletic events and competitions, demonstrations, the latest fitness products, exercise equipment, sports gear and clothing, nutritional supplements, health foods, as well as the latest in cosmetic advancements.

Doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors and other health professionals and educators will be on hand to offer on-site consultations and evaluations.

Close to two dozen different athletic and fitness championships, including martial arts, arm wrestling, CrossFit, fitness, figure, physique, bodybuilding, power lifting, strongman, and the popular Ultimate Teen Challenge, will be held during the two days.

The youngest competitor each year only is a couple of years old, while the oldest competitors are going strong at 80 and older.

The Kumite Classic, one of the most popular karate events of its kind in Pittsburgh and throughout the region with traditional and open-sport karate, grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, runs both days and will conclude with championship bouts Saturday evening.

The Ultimate Teen Challenge, set for Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will have competitors battle for $500 in scholarship money.

Those interested can register at www.theultimateteenchallenge.com or sign up before the competition begins Saturday.

The Pittsburgh Fitness Expo also is home to a talent search, similar in form to NBC’s America’s Got Talent, on Friday at 7 p.m. Register at www.pittsburghtalentsearch.com.

There will be meet-and-greet opportunities with professional athletes throughout the two days.

The expo will be from 4 to 10 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Admission Friday is $10, and it is $15 for Saturday.

Tickets will be available at the door of the Monroeville Convention Center (box office).
